Geography

At East Ardsley Primary Academy we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive as the children move through our school.

We have given consideration to topics throughout each year group across the school to ensure there is sufficient progression, and a building up of skills and knowledge. Geography is taught as part of half termly topics and integrated into other subjects where links exist. Over time the children will learn different aspects of geography: locational and place knowledge, aspects of human and physical geography as well as developing a range of geographical skills and fieldwork. This progression is designed to build on the children’s prior learning and to widen their knowledge of world from their immediate surroundings and locality, through countries in Europe, and then in other continents. As a school we are very lucky that our local area provides us with different geographical opportunities. Our aim is to fully utilise our surrounding area and seize the opportunities that learning outside the classroom have to offer.  With this approach embedded in our practice and enhanced through our quality teaching, we endeavour to ensure that our teaching focuses on enabling children to think as geographers.

Within geography, we strive to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and enquiry based learning opportunities. Our geography curriculum is of a high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. We focus on knowledge and skills combined with an emphasis on vocabulary. Children will deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes and how this affects landscapes and environments. Our children become geographers who ask questions; where things are located on the surface of the earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with the environment. By the time the children leave East Ardsley Primary Academy we want them to have enjoyed learning about geography, and to have equipped them with necessary geographical skills and knowledge to enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3.
